Project 3:
Space and Sensory: Self - Exploration through Spaces
In project 1, we had developed an understanding of design principles, processes and approaches in generating ideas and translating it into form. In project 2, we learned about structure, materials, anthropometry, and ergonomics. Project 3 incorporated all that we had learned from the previous projects.
In project 3, we looked back our shading structure and further developed it to a Sensory Space (20m3, +- 3 m3), with to anticipate and accommodate ones’ needs and emotions. We identifyed a dominant theme from our understanding of emotion. With that we enhance the structure to create a poetic architectural representation and our own reinterpretation of design based on a sensorial experience for ourself as a first-year student in university.
'A Delve into Thoughts.'
“The feelings I felt as a first year student included various feelings of anxiety, mainly social anxiety. Anxiety is considered to be a mental disorder where one is sent into a state of threat and alerts you of potential danger ahead, it is usually viewed in a negative light. It affects more than just feelings, it affects one’s behavior and approach to life. The brain and body respond differently to different threats. So how can I create a sensory space where one’s mind and body can react and adapt to a potential threat? How do I use my anxiety as an advantage and instead of blocking out my thoughts
why don’t I ‘delve into’ it?”

Our final project requires us to bring forward our Project 2 and the knowledge from Project 1 into creating a space for the same banal action from the 2nd project. Ours was resting. Our space must focus on the sensory of the space and be within the area of 20m3.
I created a maze-like structure to represent one's journey whilst tackling anxiety in completing a goal or reaching a certain destination. The maze can start at either end, each path giving a different experience. Going through the taller steel panels would signify a feeling of comfort due to the curved roof, as welcoming as it is it also serves as a reminder that the journey ahead isn't easy. One at the second point of the maze the user has the choice to take a shortcut or not. The shortcut is a difficult path one must crawl through, as in life there is no easy way out. If the user chooses to walk the long path, the user will halt at a steel-stacked tower, here the layers of steel signify the chaos of thoughts that go through one's mind. This is a space where the user is allowed to sit and reflect/meditate, a space where one is allowed to think with no restrictions. Afterward, as the user leaves from the balcony and is at a higher level the rest of the path is now clear to the user signifying that you are no longer lost and one would know their end goal.
What if I were to travel through the maze from the other end. The narrative will still apply as before, except you start your journey knowing what your end goal is because you can see your path, and somewhere along the path you lose sight of it. However both points will all lead to the same goal, it just signifies that one's journey is never bound to be the same and one can overcome it even with anxiety.
